Tonight was our first official trip to the E.R.
Today was pretty much like any other day – Peanut went to daycare, I found out I have a sinus infection, we all came home, ate dinner and settled into our evening routine. Jon was cleaning up the kitchen while Peanut and I walked to her room (oh, she walks now) and started playing before bath and bed. I climbed into the rocking chair while Peanut picked up one of her toys and was walking around with it. She neared the chair, lost her balance and smacked her head into one of the wooden part of the chair.
I looked down and she started to cry – this isn’t anything new since she has been falling a lot since she started walking. But she looked real odd for some reason so I jumped off the chair and lifted her as she started really wailing. The rest happened in approximately 15 seconds total: Peanut stopped making a sound while crying, Jon ran over and grabbed her while I started to panic. She stopped breathing, turned blue in her lips and slowly in her face and passed out.
Jon kept walking her up and down while I started to think about CPR. I put her on the couch and covered her nose and mouth with mine and gave her a few puffs of air. She woke up and started crying- the best sound I could have ever imagined. Jon and I put the dog in the crate, grabbed the keys and ran out the door to the emergency room.
On the ride over, Peanut was a little out of it, going between looking like she might pass out again and crying. At the E.R. they ushered us right into a room, checked her oxygen levels, eyes, reflexes, and talked me off a ledge. The doctor suggested a cat-scan, but Jon and I called our pediatrician to make sure they agreed since babies don’t usually get scans because of the radiation. After letting the E.R. doctor talk to our doctor, everyone decided to just observe her for another hour, but forego the cat-scan.

The first 15 minutes were pretty bad – it was past her bedtime, she didn’t have her bottle, and we were among a whole bunch of new sounds and lights. Peanut cried and cried, while Jon and I tried to calm down from the event that led us into the room in the first place. After settling down, Jon went to the car and got our portable DVD player while the nurse brought Peanut a pacifier.

After that, things were going much better! The doctor told us we’d need to hang out for about an hour so Jon went home (we live 10 minutes away) and grabbed Peanut a bottle, some pjs, and our pacifier.

Within a few minutes, she was back to her old self, crawling around the bed and giggling.

We tried to find some humor in the fact that our kid would probably be the first one to take a dive off the bed – but at least we were already in the emergency room!

(I didn’t really laugh either).
By 8:45pm the doctor came back, looked at our squirming little Peanut, and told us we were safe to go home. After talking through the incident a few times, we all determined that she most likely passed out from crying too hard and being unable to breath in.
Our instructions are to wake Peanut a couple of times in the middle of the night to make sure that she’s breathing and stuff, which basically means that I’m not going to sleep tonight.

And thus completes our first trip to the E.R.
“Hey, mom, I went to the E.R. and all I got was this bruise on my eye.”

Oh. my. god. I would have had to have been checked in alongside her for a heart attack, for sure. How terrifying! I’m so glad it all seems to have worked out okay.
And on a side note, you’re the third person I know to have had to bring their toddler to the E.R. in the past three days. What is going on??

Omg Kat! Eeek! I’m glad she’s okay. It’s things like this that make me terrified of being a parent. But already we know that you and Jon are great parents. Hoping you can at least rest a little tonight!

Oh my goodness this sounds absolutely terrifying! You are like a super hero for staying so calm and remembering CPR.
That picture of her sitting in the hospital bed watching the DVD player just makes my heart hurt. I hope everything is ok!

I guess I was totally unclear in my post – I was not calm and I could barely remember what to do for CPR!
Oh My God! How terrifying… I can’t even imagine the horror you experienced… Good for you for keeping your composure and being calm and cool under pressure. Hope P’s doing well now.
No no, there was no cool and calm, there was panic followed by the only thing I could think of possibly doing in that moment. Followed by me almost losing it and rushing out the door – Jon was still wearing his slippers!
Oh no! I can only imagine how scary that was. Hopefully you get a little sleep tonight!
So thankful she is safe and healthy. Y’all did so great thinking quick on your feet, can’t imagine how I would have flipped out!

Oh, don’t get me wrong I was FREAKING OUT!
Holy freaking scary. Good job with the quick thinking on the CPR and not completely panicking. I’m glad she’s okay!

Ohhhh, what an ordeal! I just read your blog post to Jim, and we are both here gasping for breath. You guys did great, however! Isn’t parenthood just the most heart-stoppingly terrifying thing in the world? I know you won’t get any sleep tonight, but I hope you take a moment to appreciate how fast your reflexes were, and how you passed the test with flying colors. Much love to all three of you! (and Travis, too.)

Sandi- those quotes about having babies and wearing your heart on the outside are SO TRUE. I have never had to endure so much heartache in my life!
how scary! Glad she is ok!

Oh my goodness! I can’t believe you guys went through this!
She is such a trooper and on a happier note, she looks absolutely adorable in those pics from the hospital.
We had a similar crisis this week that resulted in B being rushed to the pediatrician with a big egg & gash on his head. Welcome to being the mother of a walking toddler. It can get a little dicey! I’m so glad she seems to be ok. Good luck tonight & try to get some rest.

I am so glad she’s ok. And that you pulled together. And that you’re home. And, as someone who has had 3 concussions, the first around her age, I’m living proof that she can still turn out normal. Well, depends who you ask.

We have had 2 trips to the ER when my son was 4 months old (he is now 9 months) but neither were as scary as that. I am glad she is ok and good luck tonight!
oh god! glad that’s she’s okay…

Oh my God, Kat. I sat and read that post with my husband and we both had our jaws dropped. I am SO SORRY you had to go through that. And poor Peanut! I would have been a complete mess. I’m so glad that everything ended ok for you all though. And something really weird- Parker just had his first mini injury too. He fell on a wooden chair and hit his head in the same exact spot Peanut did. I had NO IDEA that babies could actually lose consciousness from crying too hard. Add that to my list of things that terrify me!! Is it too late to baby proof the entire world? I’m just gonna go bubble wrap our furniture…

It makes me think of what exactly am I supposed to do when she’s a teenager and wants to go drive somewhere by herself. I’ll probably just sit in the house in a fetal position until she comes back home.
Wow – so glad she’s okay – that sounds like an extremely scary experience but you were so on the ball with the CPR and everything! Great momma you are!

Oh wow, I am so sorry you guys went through that! I’d have been a mess. I did take a child CPR class at a hospital last year–but this post is a huge reminder to brush up on those skills I learned. I sure hope I never need them! I am so happy Peanut is OK. My heart was racing as I read your post.

How scary.
When my daughter was little she went through a stage where she loved balls. One day I caught her trying to stand on a ball. As soon as I was able to say “No,” and grab her she fell smack on her tailbone. She turned blue and past out and we did the Er trip as well. In our case the doctor said that her response was probably her bodys way of shutting out the pain. It didn’t really make sense to me, but she was fine and at that point that was all that mattered.
I don’t know what I would have done in that situation, how scary! I always think I’ll lose it completely in an emergency situation, but it sounds like you were spot on in your reactions. I’m glad to hear everyone is okay. On the bright side, those are some adorable jammies!

She is a tough cookie – just like her mama though!!!
I can’t believe I’m just now reading this. holy crap Kat. I can’t even freaking IMAGINE Zoe passing out in my arms. Props to you for making it through the night… I’ve heard that about crying so hard they can pass out though, it’s a built in protection system to make them breathe again. So so sorry that you had to go through that.
Poor Peanut!!! This must have been so scary for you and Jon. I am so not looking forward to these things.
