Peanut’s second birthday

Oh, peeps.  It was all I could do yesterday to keep myself together and not turn into a blabbering, bawling mess.

I think the reason that I am such a mess is that I can’t decide whether I am extremely happy that this tiny little peanut that I birthed just 2 years ago is growing into a smart, gorgeous toddler or if I’m upset that time is going too fast and my tiny little Peanut is turning into an independent, strong-willed toddler.  I guess it’s all just part of parenthood.  Somehow I feel cheated because I was not properly warned of the constant emotional dilemma that parenthood throws you into.

But that’s neither here nor there.

Today I wanted to tell you and show you the wonderful day that we had with our two year old.

I’m a big believer that birthdays are extremely special days so Jon and I both took the day off and planned a little adventure.

After presents and breakfast, we headed out to Target and let P pick out a couple of new gifts.  She’s never had the option before and we had a wonderful time watching her play with all the toys and then settling on a couple of totally age-inappropriate toys.  But a deal is a deal, so we obliged.

After a stroll through Target, we headed to Mystic Aquarium to check out some real-life Nemo and Dory fish.  Turns out that we weren’t the only ones that wanted to spend a very cold day at the Aquarium.  There were a ton of toddlers Peanut’s age running around and we had a blast watching them play.  Peanut loved the tanks, the fish, and especially the water.

2 hours later we grabbed some lunch together at Five Guys and headed home for a nap.

I think Peanut knew it was an exciting day because she only slept for about an hour before getting up and picking up where she left off.  We packed everyone up once again and headed to her daycare to indulge ourselves in some cupcakes and good company.

The rest of the afternoon was low key – we played with the balloons and toys, crafted with play doh, ate some snacks.  Peanut seemed to not be feeling so great so we decided to stop in at the Pediatrician only to learn that she had a double ear infection and some kind of eye thing.  Awesome.  Pizza and some prescription drugs and we called it a day.

Do you do anything special for your birthday?

  1. Happy Happy Birthday Peanut!! Hard to believe I’ve been reading your blog for over 2 years now since I came for my first visit right before she was born. My time has flown.

Growing up I was lucky that most of my family lived within 30 miles of us so we’d have a big birthday party with cousins, grandparents, uncles & aunts. It was usually held the weekend after my birthday. That one year my theme was My Little Ponies. (remember how cool those were!!) The invite said to bring your favorite Little Pony and it was sent to my classmates and also to my family so both of my Grandma’s brought their “favorites” too!! Good memories!!

Happy belated birthday, Peanut!! Wow that seemed like such a FUN DAY!! I also started reading your blog shortly before you found out there would be a third King, and I can’t believe she is already 2!!! Looks like y’all had such a great time (minus the double ear infection…) and the pictures are wonderful!

  3. Happy Birthday, Peanut!! Looks like you all had an absolute blast together! My birthday was yesterday, too, and I’m making it a week-long celebration. So yes you could say I love birthdays and think they are special :)

  4. I don’t work on my birthday and depending on when it falls, I try & take either the day before or the day after off (this year it was a Saturday so I took off Friday). I have an early December birthday and when I was in school it was the end of the semester so it was usually spent getting ready for finals or taking a final exam. As an adult now, I indulge in a day to myself and usually I get some of my Christmas shopping done too!

  5. Happy Birthday, Peanut! My daughter’s birthday is in 2 weeks and she’s also turning 2. I am not sure what we are doing special, but that is a great idea to take the day off and do something fun. We might have to do that as well.

  6. I think Addison’s birthday was probably better than most of my recent birthdays! Lucky girl.

I hope you’re ready for bowling in a couple of weeks!

  7. So sweet. It really is amazing how fast it goes–everyone says it but it sure doesn’t ring true until you’re living it!

  8. Happy Birthday Peanut!!! I love that you both took the day off. Birthday’s are my favorite holiday =) I love that we get to celebrate life for a full day!

  9. Happy birthday! What a great day y’all had! It looks like so much fun and she looks so, so happy! I swear time completely turns upside down when you become a mother…how does it go so fast?? Why is this the longest day ever??? Ha! I’m glad y’all got some good birthday celebrations in. I think birthdays are super special too! :)

  10. Ahhhhh. This is us in two months with our own little Peanut. Where does the time go? I feel the same way: love the increased independence, and adore toddlerhood…but it can be so frustrating (and terrifying) all in the same moment.

    Happy Birthday to Peanut!

Birthday’s were a non-event in my house growing up, and I’m determined to make them a semi-big deal in our new family. I was reading a parenting magazine this evening and they talked about one family’s tradition of “Half-Birthdays” – where you get 1/2 a cupcake and blow out a used candle on the half-way point to your birthday. Think that is SOOO cute…and I would definitely make my husband give me a Half-Birthday too. Another idea I read once is random “candle-blowing” practice days. For breakfast a mom would (randomly) use a mini cupcake or mini muffin and have a candle in it. She would tell her daughter she needed to “practice” blowing out candles before her real birthday. How special would THAT be as a kid…to wake up to a candle in your breakfast muffin. Definitely going to use that one too.

  11. Happy Birthday Peanut!!! I am with you. Birthday’s are big, huge, exciting and special! I celebrate mine all month!

  12. Looks like a fabulous birthday!!

  13. Happy Birthday to your two year old “baby”.

I always take the day off from work and spend it doing my favorite things and I usually make my own cake to my mother’s dismay!

  14. What wonderful way to celebrate Peanut’s second birthday! Happy belated to your sweet girl!
